Coalition for Inclusive Democracy
True inclusive democracy requires more than diverse participation. It requires meaningful representation, equitable access to political power, transparent decision-making, and accountability to the people.
An Inclusive Vision for Democracy
To build a truly inclusive democracy where every voice matters, every community is represented, power belongs to the people
A Mission for Democracy the Works
To advance inclusive democracy by empowering grassroots voices, expanding representation, and fostering transparent, accountable leadership within political parties. We champion structural reforms, equitable campaign financing, and fair voting processes to ensure every member has an equal voice in shaping political decisions and the future of democracy.
Steps Toward True Inclusive Democracy
1. Democratize Political Party Governance
Establish elected, representative governing bodies at every level of political parties. Give grassroots members, local leaders, and elected representatives meaningful participation in policymaking, leadership selection, and organizational decisions.
2. Ensure Equal Representation and Participation
Establish fair representation for communities across race, gender, age, geography, disability, and socioeconomic background. Remove barriers that prevent underrepresented groups from participating in political leadership and decision-making.
3. Reform Primary Elections and Candidate Selection
Examine open-primary models that permit unaffiliated voters to participate without permanent party registration. Establish transparent candidate qualification and nomination procedures that give grassroots candidates meaningful opportunities to compete.
Primary eligibility rules vary by state and may require changes to state law or party rules.
4. Establish Democratic Leadership Elections
Ensure party leaders and voting delegates are selected through fair, competitive elections. Examine the role of unelected delegates, establish reasonable term limits, and provide mechanisms for members to hold leadership accountable.
5. Reform Campaign Financing
Examine public financing and small-dollar donation matching programs to broaden candidates' access to campaign resources. Strengthen financial disclosure and establish transparent criteria for distributing party resources.
Public matching funds are an established feature of the federal presidential primary financing program.
6. Modernize Voting and Election Processes
Evaluate ranked-choice voting and other electoral systems for party leadership and public elections. Establish clear counting procedures, accessible ballots, voter education, and independent verification of election results.
7. Empower Grassroots and Local Organizations
Give local committees meaningful authority over community priorities, organizing strategies, and resource allocation. Establish formal channels through which grassroots members can propose reforms and influence decisions at higher organizational levels.
8. Guarantee Transparency and Accountability
Publish party constitutions, governing rules, budgets, leadership decisions, and voting records where appropriate. Establish independent ethics procedures, accessible complaint mechanisms, and regular opportunities for members to review leadership performance.
9. Expand Civic Education and Political Access
Provide accessible information about voting rights, political processes, party governance, and opportunities for participation. Address practical barriers through language access, disability accommodations, convenient meeting schedules, and affordable participation.
10. Institutionalize Continuous Democratic Reform
Establish a permanent, member-elected reform committee with authority to review governance practices and propose constitutional amendments. Require regular member consultation, transparent reporting, and periodic evaluation of whether reforms expand participation and representation.
